Hypertrophy Vs Strength Training
Two of the major types of weight training are for hypertrophy and for strength. Bodybuilders tend to do more hypertrophy training. They do this because hypertrophy focuses on building muscle. When doing hypertrophy, most exercises should be with the 8-12 rep ranges and should be going heavy enough to get 8 but failing before 12. Strength Training is more for athletes and especially powerlifters. This is focused on strength obviously and the rep ranges go anywhere between 3-5 reps and even 1-2. This technique is more for overall strength then form and going to failure like hypertrophy. It is beneficial to use both methods to get the best of both worlds but a lot of the time people really only stick to one method. I personally like to mix in both because I like to lift heavy weight and also look as best as I possibly can.
